Margo jolted up in bed, shivering. She had felt the blow, but when she reached for the back of her head, the pain was gone.

The fading remnants of moonlight slipped through her bedroom windows, highlighting the silhouette of the black cat who was sitting a few feet away, staring at her. Something appeared behind Sir Blackclaw, looking at first like bits of dust dancing in the dim light. But soon, it coalesced into a thick mist. Blackclaw yowled as it started to engulf him, leaping from her bed. Margo sat frozen, blinking her eyes as an image formed in front of her. A man. The face wasn’t crisp, but she could make out enough to know she’d seen it before. And just as she realized where she had seen that face, it spoke. “Save her!”

The words rushed forth like a burst of wind, echoing through her bedroom. Though the mist quickly faded into nothingness, the sound refused to dissipate, lingering until it was shattered by Margo’s scream.
